Jody was the first horse we purchased for the school. She was bought locally February
28, 2002. She is 14 hands 3 inches tall and will weigh about 1050#. Her color is
referred to as flea-bitten gray. She looks like she is a Quarter Horse but there were no
registration papers with her. We think she was born in 1986.
She belonged to a teenage girl that was getting another horse and had to give up Jody.
She had used her for junior rodeo competition. She came with the name Jody.
She has a permanent stifle (joint in the hind leg) injury in her left hind leg. She can work
but her stride is compromised due to the problem. Out by herself, she has been seen
loping. We use her mainly at the walk now with little riders. I had her checked the spring
of 2008 and Doc feels she can handle about 150# at this point.
I keep an eye on her ability to get up and down and move around. She doesn’t seem to
be getting any worse and unfortunately, she won’t get any better.
2008 she apparently banged her head against something and broke a bone under her
left eye. She never showed any evidence of pain or discomfort as a result.
Information states that 80 % of gray horses (they have what is called a graying gene)
will develop cancer around age 15. Jody came with a couple of bumps under the tail
that are the forerunners of this. It is a benign form but can be unsightly. I treated her
with an herb (orally) and so far nothing more has developed.
Jody is sweet with people and crabby with the other horses. We can use her safely for
very small riders.
In her time with us we have ridden her on trail rides and she has been a nice stable
ride. She is dependable starting riders both in saddle and bareback.
